It is our intention to make Wellingborough Town the prime
football club in Wellingborough and with your assistance
no doubt this can be achieved. Now that the future of
the club has been guaranteed, this is a wonderful opportunity
for young players to progress through the club to senior
level and be able to play semi pro football for Wellingborough
Town Football Club.
Our Football Chairman is Steve Whitney.
A
former Swansea City apprentice professional, he was signed
by Ron Atkinson for Kettering Town in the summer of 1972
after being released by the Swans. Steve played a number
of first-team games for the Poppies but suffered a bad
knee injury that eventually meant leaving his beloved
Rockingham Road. Steve also played UCL football for the
likes of Raunds Town, Rushden Town and Burton Park Wanderers
and also had a spell with Biggleswade as well as a stint
as player-manager with Burton United.
Steve
started managing at under-18 level with Kettering back
in 1984 and led a side only re-formed a month before the
season began to the League Cup Final against Northampton
Town that season.
Steve
has since had a second spell in charge of the Poppies
youngsters as well as Yeovil Town Rothwell Town, and Desborough
Town before taking over as first-team manager at UCL side
Irchester United in 2004.
Our
First Team Coach is Nick Ashby.
Nick
rejoined Raunds Town as player-manager towards the end
of the 2004/05 season and guided the Shopmates away from
the relegation zone.
He
started his career under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest
and then played under his father Roger, the current boss
of Nuneaton Borough, at Rushden Town where they won the
Southern League Midland Division, and then Aylesbury United
before moving to Kettering Town in 1994 where he won the
first of five England caps.
He
rejoined his father at Rushden & Diamonds and helped
to win the Southern Premier title.
He
then had spells with Burton Albion, Raunds and Stamford,
where he was player/assistant-manager under Billy Jeffrey.
Last
season he led the Shopmates to a creditable eighth spot
in the Premier Division on a much-reduced budget.
Ex-Burton
Albion, Yeovil Town, Rothwell and Desborough left-sided
player Les Hornby is joining Ashby in the move to the
Dog & Duck as his number two. Les also coaches the
Wellingborough Town Under 14 team.
